How To Kennel Train: Positive Dog Training

If you have a new puppy or even an older dog that you don't want roaming free while you are away at work, you may be considering kennel training. This process involves getting your pooch used to being in a crate for an extended period of time. If you kennel train the correct way, your dog will soon learn to love their crate and come to know it as a safe place where they can relax. Here’s how you can successfully kennel train your dog.

Choose The Right Crate

It’s imperative that you choose the right crate for your dog because the wrong one will hinder the process. The crate should allow your dog to stand up in it fully, be able to turn around in it and comfortably lay down. However, it shouldn’t have so much extra room that they can use it to relieve themselves as well. It can be very beneficial to begin kennel
training as a puppy, but lot of new puppy owners make the mistake of getting a crate that’s too large, and they end up having a difficult time trying to keep their puppy from going to the bathroom inside of the crate. If you are worried about having to buy a larger crate in the future, you can purchase one that comes with a divider that can be removed once your puppy grows and needs more room in their crate. Choosing the right crate is one of the most important parts of Corpus Christi dog training.

Let Them Explore It

You shouldn’t try to introduce your puppy to the crate by shoving them in it against their will. This will cause them to try to avoid it at all costs. It’s best to let them explore it on their own. Leave the door open, and place a few treats inside for them to find. Once they do go inside of the crate, you should praise them. You can also place their favorite toy inside of it to make it more inviting as well. If your dog seems to be
comfortable in the crate, close the door for a few minutes so that they can get used to it. If you notice that they are whimpering, yelping or scratching the inside of the crate, you should open the door immediately. Do keep in mind that dog training Corpus Christi may take several weeks, and you shouldn't try to rush the process. Doing this slowly can help make the kennel their safe place and even help with or prevent separation anxiety.

Slowly Increase The Amount Of Time You Leave Them In It

Once your dog seems okay with having the door closed, you can start leaving them in the crate for short periods of time, and slowly extend the amount of time that you leave them in it. If they are being quiet while they are in the crate during your puppy training Corpus Christi, resist the urge to check on them as they may want out once they see you.

Do keep in mind that the amount of time that it takes to kennel train varies with each dog. The key to being successful is to be patient and to provide a lot of positive feedback to your pooch throughout the entire process.
