How to Begin: Dog Obedience Training

It's such a fun bonding experience to train your dog how to do new tricks and provides excellent mental stimulation for them. Basic commands are obviously important for function, communication, and quality of life together, but some commands are just impressive or entertaining tricks to teach your dog for fun. One simple two-part trick is to train your dog how to wrap themselves up in a blanket like a burrito. It can be useful if they're cold and can create a solution to that problem themselves, but mostly it's just cute!

Start off by teaching them how to "hold". You can use that word as a cue or a different word that you think would be easier for them to pick up on. All dogs are different, and you know yours best. You can put an object- even a toy- in their mouth and gently press on top of their muzzle and under their chin so that they understand you're wanting them to keep the object in their mouth. Say your command cue and then reward with a treat. Slowly build up the amount of time you have them hold the object so they'll eventually continue holding until you give your release cue.

Next, you want to teach them how to "roll over". If they already know how to lie down on command it can be really helpful. Have them lie down while holding a treat in your hand, move the treat around the outside of their head and then up, over, and around them to try to get them to follow the treat with their head, and then to follow their head with their body while repeating the cue word of your choice, such as "roll over". A perfect follow-through may take several tries, but every time they do it successfully ensure you reward with a treat. Repeat this training for 15 minutes at a time every day until they understand the command and you don't need to direct them with a treat and you can simply give it to them after.

"Wrapping it Up": Easy Puppy Training

Finally, it's burrito time. Lay a blanket flat on the floor, and try to direct your dog to lie on top of it against the edge. Help them line up straight if needed or the roll won't work correctly. Now, ask them to "hold" the corner of the blanket and to roll over. At first, they may be confused with the concept of doing two tricks at the same time and may release the blanket, but if needed you can go back and work on training that command until they've mastered it better. However, after a few attempts, they should get the hang of the process and you can apply a command to the two-part trick such as "burrito!" or "wrap it up!" As long as you're rewarding them with treats consistently, they should be pros in no time.

We hope this simple guide provides a new trick you may not have thought of and a fun training experience with your dog! If you have any questions or need help getting started, Elite-K9 is just a call away.
